one species or separte? I have an AP Biology project in which I have to write a research paper on orchids. One of the objectives is to discuss species, the species debate, and how this relates to orchids.

Additionally, I have to discuss the genetics behind the breeding of the orchid as well as any evolutionary adaptations this particular orchid has for survival.

PLEASE HELP THIS IS A MAJOR PART OF MY GRADE!!!!

and PLEASE no stupid answers!!

THANKS!!!!

Seeing as how this project is a major component of your final grade, I feel obliged to point you to some resources but unwilling to just feed you the answers. The debate about species realities and definitions is an interesting one with a long history. The BSC is certainly appealing, but it has been (convincingly) argued by many academics to be inherently flawed. Ecological and phylogenetic species concepts are great alternatives, and you should be able to find out more about them through Google (Scholar) searches. One great review in the highly respected Quarterly Review of Biology can be accessed at the web site of the lead author (Dr. Agapow):

With regard to orchids and their incredible diversity (15-20,000 species), I would visit these web sites to get started:
