How does the reserve work on a 98 honda CBR600 F3?

ive ran out of gas a couple times,and can get the reseve to work.Am i leaving it on or not filling the reserve up.I just dont get how it works
how does the petcock work what is straight up what is one click clockwise and what is one click down.do i have to have reserve on to fill the reserve and then swithch back or what?i dont understand how to use the reserve on my bike not in general
 
There is a tube about 3 inches long (like a drinking straw) that sticks up into the tank.
With the petcock (on/off/reserve valve) is in the on position, gas leaves the tank through that tube.
When the fuel level drops below that tube, no more fuel can enter the tube and leave the tank.

Switch to reserve and the fuel leaves the tank directly from the petcock - at the bottom of the tank.
 
there are two pickups in the tank and one is higher than the other the longer of the two is your main feed and the lower of the two is your reserve so when you are on reserve you are taking the last gas out of the bottom of the tank..
