how does the news make sure their sources are creditable?

my girl friend and I had this argument that newspaper were not as creditable as private citizens because those papers are influenced by the advertisers that finance them.
is she like... ahh.. totally wrong.
 
they dont
they just print what they are told to print by the government
they even print the lies that started the Iraqi invasion and occupation by the USA.
Now they print the lies about global warming -
climate gate - which shows that global warming is a LIE
most news papers are not touching it.
the advertiser have NO INFLUENCE any more.
