I'm having to do a report of the similarities between the movie and actual history. where do they match up and differ?

It matches up to everything. Its based on a true story of the real guy.
William Poole (July 24, 1821 – March 8, 1855), also known as Bill the Butcher, was a member of the New York City gang the Bowery Boys, a bare-knuckle boxer, and a leader of the Know Nothing political movement. He got payed large sums of money to make sure the right person or persons got elected. He would send his gangs thru the city to election ballot stations and they made sure the people voted how they wanted or get killed. He invented the first street gangs that actually had control of certain parts of the city.
