How does the brain, something of material ordinance, harbor the consciousness or soul

of a metaphysical world? As the title says. I've always been baffled as to how or even why we are conscious in no effort to the functions of the brain and our actions, given the light on predetermined cognitive acts influenced by prior states and conditions of the external world.
