How does someone get herpes?

Does someone only get herpes through sex? Can you get it any other way? My dad has been itching really badly and has welts that he says look like they might be from the herpes family. If my dad does have herpes would that mean he got it through sex? Can you get it any other way?
 
yeah you can get it from kissing, touching soemthing that has it on it, like cold sores they are herpes. he could be allergic to fabric starch.or anything, certian plants, like feverfew or conifer.it oculd be anything, he should go to the doctors
 
herpes has many forms - cold sores, chickenpox and genital herpes.they can be spread from sex (while someone has open sores), kissing someone with a cold sore, oral sex, or contact (chickenpox).sounds like he has shingles which is when the chickenpox virus comes out of remission as an adult

HSV-1 is the form that is on your lips, and mouth (cold sores). Sometimes you can get these by not even kissing, they just come at times. Even little children sometimes have these.HSV-2 is the form that is an STD. Believe me, he would know of he had those. And these are with you for the rest of your life (as are 1, but form 1 is not severe at all and over 95% of the population has HSV1)There are so many herpes type viruses that humans get. Varicella, Shingles, Chickenpox, Epstein Barr(form that Mono is in). Herpes type 8 is called Kaposi's Sarcoma and it is what those infected with the AIDS virus get. Usually death occurs a short time after these sores appear. He really could have anything.
 
You can get it from sharing a wet towel with somebody who has got it.You can also get it from coming into contact with a herpes sore on somebody else - it does not have to be sexual contact, for example if somebody with a herpes sore on their face kisses your cheek, then you will catch it.
 
Slightly concerned here... you been making out with your dad or something?If somebody has oral herpes and they go down on you then you can get genital herpes. If you kiss them then you can get oral herpes. You CAN get it if you touch the sores and then touch an open membrane (like your eyes) so be careful.Best advice- stay away, have him get checked and stop kissing him.
