How does Operation Ajax (U.S. involvement in Iran in 1953) relate to the Cold War?

It doesn't, really. An anti-communist democracy was replaced by the anti-communist Shah. Iran was important, especially for elint, in the Cold War, but this was just a governmental action for the oil corporations, one we've been paying heavily for now for a long time.

I need to know how this operation fits into the Cold War picture. Was it an independent event that just happened in the 50's or does it tie into the Cold War picture somehow?

Operation Ajax was one of the first CIA operations of its kind - and was soon followed by dozens and dozens after it. It truly set the stage for the CIA's 'Coups 'R Us' mentality, and fits in very well with the following events in Gautemala, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Brasil, Bolivia, Argentina, Honduras, Paraguay, Chile, Vietnam, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Fiji, Greece, and Zaire!
