How does one go about opposing a schoool board decision?

The school board of the city I live in just passed a motion to enforce the one mile walk zone. It's where kids who live within one mile of their school must walk to school and no buses will pick them up. This goes for elementary schoolers as well. I'm very opposed to this decision for obvious reasons. Kids could be kidnapped, get hit by a car, not to mention that there's a large number of sex offenders against children living in the one mile radius of the school. The school my son goes to alone has 9 registered sex offenders within one mile of said school. Does anyone know what I can do to oppose this? What are the steps? Would a petition work? I'm very new at this because my son just started school. Thanks in advance.
