Hoekom jy my haat

A very good friend and I occasionally go out to eat. Sometimes nice places, sometimes just dives, but he always eats so dreadfully fast that he is done by the time I've taken only a few bites.
Then I'm stuck staring at him and an empty plate while I finish eating, and feel compelled to eat more quickly than I'd like.
I like to linger over dinner (not overly long, just maybe 45 minutes or so) conversing while eating, enjoying each others company.
One more question, how do you tell a grown man that the way he holds his cutlery is socially wrong. He's a brilliant man, a scientist with the gov't, but holds his fork and knife like a 6 year old.
The speed with in which he eats is not offensive (but his cutlery usage is), but it is so disagreeble to me that I have begun to to eat out with him less often as we once did.
It makes me very uncomfortable. I know, my discomfort is my problem, not his, but it IS leading to our going out less frequently. Should I tell him why?
