Movie Review, ‘A Nightmare on Elms Street’ (1984)
“What is seen is not always real,” A Nightmare on Elms Street. This original horror movie had and still has everyone jumping out of their seats. Freddy Kruger, a fictional character is one of the top ten American horror icons. Freddy was not like any type of serial killer. Freddy Kruger kills you in a place where you least expect it, in your dreams. If you die in a nightmare, then you die in the real world.
Freddy Kruger is the neighborhoods legend that never died. Freddy was a maintenance guy for a pre-school, he was also a child murderer, and once the parents of the kids found out they chased Freddy Kruger and burned him alive. Now years later the teenagers; Nancy Thompson, Tina Gray, Rob Lane, and Glen Lants are having trouble sleeping. Nightmares about a burned guy, wearing an old dusty green and red sweater, and let’s not forget about those customized knife nails. When you start to hear “one, two, Freddy’s coming for you” then you know to run.
A Nightmare on Elms Street is different from other horror movies. You don’t see any other movies where the killer is able to kill you in real life and in your dreams; it’s basically a distortion of reality. I am usually expecting a person waking up from a nightmare and then the killer gets them. Not the other way around where you “think” you’re awake when you’re really not, then you’re dead, something unique and different from other movies like; Halloween and Friday the 13th. In some scenes you don’t know if the character is awake or asleep. Sometimes the character blinks, opens eyes then their still doing what they were doing before, making it hard to see if it’s really a dream until you see Freddy Kruger in front of that character.
A Nightmare on Elms Street was filmed in Los Angeles, a perfect location for a horror type of movie. Los Angeles has a lot of alleys and plenty of places that look old and creepy. Wes Craven was the director for the movie and was also the writer. He budgeted around $1,800,000 for A Nightmare on Elms Street, on opening weekend Nov 11th 1984, the movie made $1,271,000.
