affect my taxes? I am a 27 year old, full time student that has lived with my mother since the end of 2007. My mother wants to claim head of household for 2010 and amend her 2008 and 2009 tax returns since she filed single. During 2008 and 2009 I was employed, but haven't worked for the majority of 2010. Since I am a full time student, I receive loans and grants. Although she pays for the house, she DOES NOT pay any of my personal bills (car, gas, phone, food, insurance, etc.) and we've also agreed on the amount of rent that I pay for living with her. I am wondering how her filing head of household will affect my taxes, during both the prior tax years, and the current tax year that I was unemployed. Even though I haven't worked most of 2010, I had to cash in my 401K to help make ends meet, so I will probably have to file a return for 2010 anyway since I believe I'll owe a tax penalty for that (correct me if I'm wrong). Does anybody have any insight as to how this situation will turn out? Will her filing head of household penalize me when I do my return (and possibly prior years' returns)? Thanks in advance for all of your help!
