How does mercury continue to out-gas for years?

In the movie, The Beautiful Truth, they showed a 50 year old dental filling that was out-gassing mercury? After 50 years, how does it have enough material to out-gas? At what point does it run out of material? The filling is pretty small in the first place.

Any ideas? Thank you.
