How does medieval times treat their horses?

I recently went to meideval times, and saw how unhappy the horses acted. After the show,I felt guilty taking pleasure in the jousting, because I kow it causes quite a bit of distress to the horses. I was wondering, how are the horses treated. Also, do they sleep at the Medieval Times facility? Thanks!
