How does dropping out of school work (I'M JUST CURIOUS!!)?

ok so the other day i was thinking about kids dropping out of school because i had just read this book about a kid wanting to drop out

so how does that work? if ur not eighteen (legal adult) then how do you do it? do u purposely flunk? ask ur parents?

im not at all interested in it, i was just confused.....
