how does clearblue pregnancy test work?

My girlfriend just used Clearblue pregnancy test and it came up negative but the area around the negative isnt purely white. I'm assuming that the positive like that was suppose to be there got washed off since shes not pregnant. Anyone can tell me how the strip actually works as in why the positive sign comes on and how it stays like that?
