How does activation technically work?

When I call to activate a new receiver they say it could take a few hours.

If during that time I am still playing with cables/TV stuff (moving things around) and my receiver isn't plugged in at that second, do I potentially miss the activation signal?

Is it like some message in the satellite stream that will only be there for a few seconds, and if my receiver misses it I have to call them up again?

you are absolutely coreect sir! right on the spot. you must have sat feed connected to da IRD before calling in to activate.

If you choose to speak to an agent they will ask you to:
*Go to MENU 6-1-1 to make sure signal is over 70%
(If it's not the case agent will refuse to proceed with the activation)
*Press cancel, then 3 (You will see system info), they will ask you the receiver number R001234567 and smartcard number S001234567
*They will ask you to press 3 (to be in system info 3) and will ask you the REV number
*They are also supposed to ask you in which room of the house the receiver will be and if you have a cottage or second residence

The agent will then tell you that whithi 15min-2hours you will get all the channels you suscribe, but in most cases channels are there whithin a few minutes

You can also choose to go on the bell.ca website to activate it yourself...all you need is to open a session (if you never been on the website you might need to register) and follow the steps mentionned previously, enter the smartcard and receiver number

Your channels will be on whithin 15min-2hours...

Sometimes it does work right away and sometimes, for an unknown reason it doesn't get done

Ummm...I believe the activation signal stays in the data stream for more than a few seconds. In my experience with BEV, activation happens pretty much instantly.

It all depends on what is in the queue for the data stream. Sometimes it can be slotted in right away, but during heavy maintenance periods (streaming new firmware or other updates) it can take a while.

Separate the 2 functions:
Activation and Authorization

If a brand new card receiver (never activated) are being used then it is possible to miss the commands to perform the activation. However, I believe they do repeat these during the first 24 hours but to be safe.

If a receiver and card have been used before, but are simply unauthorized, then the re-authorisation commands come through at regular intervals.

The simplest and best thing to do is to get everythign hooked up, then call, then wait until the sequence is complete and ALL programming is set up. Then make any further changes. It avoids potential for having to call back. Calling in is of course an option and they will simply perform the steps again, but why put everyone through that. Just do it right the first time.

Receivers that have been activated previously (that you would have bought used) could ONLY be activated by TALIKING TO AN AGENT.

If you go on the internet it would tell you that this receiver is already linked to another's account and will tell you to call the tech support line

When I had my 9242 activated, it had only took a few minutes.

I was watching TV as soon as the installer was out the door.

if an activation signal is missed after adding the receiver online, is it possible to get it activated through a programming sync?

No. Activation and programming resyncing are 2 different things. See RC's note above though for something that will work. You can of course call in to a CSR as well.

Activated the 3100 on line. It was up and ready in about fifteen minutes after it downloaded all the program guide stuff and so on.
