How does a sport join the NCAA?

For example, if I wanted to have bowling join, how might that occur? Is there a probationary period, paperwork, etc. Is there a website of where I might be able to get the info from?

I've looked at the NCAA.org/com website and found nothing that helps clarify. Would contacting be any better?
