How does a pump at a filling/petrol station know, when my car's tank is full?

I live in Denmark, and now and then when I refuel my car, the pump's at the station automatically stops, when the tank is full, it makes no difference weather my tank is half full or almost empty.
What kind of mechanics are in play? - Please be specific, thank you.
