how does a fish tank heater work?

mine has a little red light that keeps going on and off. its not a regular kind of heater either, it doesnt have a little dial for me to regulate the temp. all i can do is watch the thermometer and hope. its a submersible type and my thermometer is the little sticker that you can stick to ur aquarium.
nvm, i googled it and its a 100w preset heater that only goes to 70 degrees F
 
You need to get one with a dial so that you can set the tempeture of the tank accourding to the fish you have. To do this you set the heater in the tank and adjust the dial to a high setting when the tempeture of the tank is set at what you want you lower the tempeture of the heater by turning the dial slowly until the red light goes off. Than your tank heater is set and thats all. I've never heard of one without a dial maybe look more closely at it or you'll end up with too hot or too cold of a tank if there is no way to adjust it.
