how does a credit report dispute work?

I filed a dispute with Equifax 38 days ago, it says pending. I had a debt of 400 to a renter through collections that i paid off in may or june 2010 and both trans union and experian have the correct updated information and equifax does not. i was just curious how it happens, like if they discover they are wrong and fix it on my report does that happen automatically by the 45 days? or does it take another crapload of weeks to update. i live in florida and most of the companies down here use equifax to determine credit and ive been waiting to apply again for a card because i keep getting denied even though my score is good with the other two companies. ALSO when updated, do i have to build my credit back up with them even though it is their mistake and not mine. or when they report the correction does my score automatically go up to what it should have been? one last question, is there a way i can send a credit card company a copy of my receipt from the collector to verify equifax's error? or do they only look at score and not details of report? because im having a bad month for work hours and credit would help but i dont have many months to build it back up before basic training.
i know the situation that got me into debt, and i know how security clearances and credit cards go, my debt is paid. lets focus on recovery.
