How does 3G work....??

ok, i know how it works, but i asked this in another thread and i didn't really get an answer....

let's say i have an unlocked phone, something N-Series sounds nice, and i'm sitting in new york right now...and i have t-mobile.

will i be able to get 3G speeds on the data side?? the voice will be, but will the data??...that is the question.

yeah, that's weird though. you would think that they would allow it, besides since there are no 3G data phones out with tmobile right now anyways, they wouldn't restrict it to make sure everything is in working order. kind of like a beta run.
 
Tmo's 3G operates on a different band. I think 1700/2100 as opposed to 1900/2100 so you wouldnt be able to use any other carriers device on their 3G network anyway.
