How does 1984 relate to US History?

I just read 1984 for one of my classes. I can see how the effect of media has taken over society, but how has it effected our history?
 
example from your immediate history:
You were made to believe by the propaganda of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld that the US needs a war with Iraq, with the same lies and with the tool of fear, like the government in 1984.
It is proven that there were no weapons of mass destruction and the US was never in danger.
