How do you watch legally downloaded/online rental films on your TV?

I know that it's possible if you have certain games consoles but what if you don't? As far as I can see there's no way to get a film from a computer to your TV.

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop, probably a Macbook, but do most new laptops have the facility to do this and is the picture quality at least as good as DVRAB?

My laptop has an HDMI socket, as does my TV, so for me the physical connection is just an HDMI cable. That's probably a good method if your TV is HD; it's something to check when you buy the laptop. Some TVs also have USB sockets and even wireless networks, but I doubt those routes would have the bandwidth you need for excellent telly.

The picture quality depenRAB on the source. YouTube and iPlayer don't look as good as SD TV. I've not downloaded any full movies.

You can do one of the following:

1) Connect your laptop to your TV

2) Transfer the movie onto USB, if you have a dvd player which can playback content from usb, plug in the usb to the dvd player and connect it to the TV.

3) If your TV has a USB port which allows you to playback content from usb devices, plug the USB pen into the TV.

Coincidentally I stumbled across a thread on Macrumors yesterday about connecting to a TV. Is Apple TV only useful if you get all your films from iTunes and conversely, is iTunes a viable way to download films if you don't have Apple TV? (I've never used iTunes for anything other than music and apps.)
