How do you use a softbox in combination with an Olympus E-410 ?

Is a softbox typically used as a secondary light source or as a primary/single light source ? And how is the light source inside the softbox triggered if the camera has no wireless capability ? As a slave, i suppose would be a solution but then again, what if one doesn't want to use another flash, how would it be triggered by my E-410 ? The only outputs on my camera are a USB connection for transferring pictures on the pc, and the AV Out. And of course the flash hotshoe.
