How do you use a debit card or a check card at a clothing store?

my cousin just got a debit card and she has no idea how to use it. i always use cash so i don't no how to use it idea. so she is gonna go shopping with it but at the store, do they ask her for her pin number or do they make her sign the receipt? or both?
 
If using a debit card, they would ask her to enter a pin. The pin number should be enclosed with the card that it came with. Some stores ask to sign a piece of paper and some don't.
