How do you update so you can start using DirectX 10/11 for Civilization 5?

I've confirmed that i have directx 10 installed on my machine and all the patches (i've assumed) have automatically downloaded from steam, but i cannot start it using directx 10. I can play with DX9 but i think it would be cool to play it on DX10
and if possible avoid getting a new video card
