How do you unlock new charcters on Naruto Arena?

How do you unlock new characters for Naruto Arena? Its not fair that other people have stronger characters than mine. Like for example:
Mine: Sakura, Tenten,Neji
Opponent: 4th Hokage, Jiraiya, Tsunade

And I'm still an Academy Student! And so are they! How do they unlock those characters anyway?!
