How do you think US History be remembered if slavery and segregation are left out?

I've heard people say before that as a society, we should "move on" from the memories of slavery and segregation, because they are ugly, embarrassing and painful things to recall. But does moving on mean that this part of American history should not be taught anymore? Or if it is taught, how should it be remembered?

You cannot just take out any part of American history. You see, every little detail and everything during it's time was a step forward, a progression. It was because of what happened in the past that makes us who and what we are today. Destroying the past would be destroying the future.

of course it needs to be taught honestly and openly, every black mark the breaking of the treaties with the native americans, slavery, segregation everything ugly. It has to be be taught so we learn from it and become a better nation.

The facts should be taught, but agonizing over the wrongs of history degrades society. When I see bright, Intelligent, sweet faces of children, it pains me to know that they will told that their ancestors were either evil or slaves. That is a simplification that leaves children confused, ashamed and divided against each other. Parents and educators should be aware that their words have consequences.

All of these things should be taught but should not be used as an excuse for current generations. People need to appreciate the sacrifices their ancestors made for them and move on with their lives.

It needs to be taught so then we can remember the past and make sure we dont repeat it. If we forget the past how can we learn from our mistakes?
