How do you tell if a Video Game still has a active player base?

I am no longer on my PC and now have a laptop which can not run the games I was playing on my PC. I still would like to have a game from time to time and was wondering if there is a way to tell if some older games still have people playing them without buying the game. The only sites I found that report to track player bases are way out of date with no games from the last year or two(or more) even being mentioned.
