How do you tell a hair stylist what you want done?

As far as a cut is concerned........

It is very frustrating to have them ask if I want "layers" as I don't know what that will mean as far as maintaining the look I want.

I grew my hair out for the last 1 1/2 years and it was all one length and very full and nice but it was getting to the point where the curl would come out because of the heaviness of the hair so I asked for "layers" and although I may have gotten what I asked for my hair will not hold any kind of curl and I have actually been crying because my hair is so messed up.

Any pointers?
