How do you take a photo of a piece of paper? Such that you can read it. HELP?

I have self written documents that I want to capture in digital format. The clarity and zoom/proximity of the camera has to allow easy reading of the text on the papers. I am not sure how this is done. Or will my digital camera use autozoom and allow an in focus close up picture?
