How do you study for a college biology exam?

Well I just took my first biology test and I failed it. I studied I read but the questions were so hard! So I am going to ask my teacher for help but I wanted to hear from you guys. I was so overwhelmed taking the test I studied that concepts like what something did etc... and the test was more like this and and this are examples of what___ and most of the stuff was not even from the book, so how would i study for that? if its not even in the book? please help I need to keep my grade high for this class
