How do you start your portfolio?

Been learning a lot about shares lately and became surprised that my parents had none what so ever. I convinced them to get some shares together but i do not really know how to help them start. I was wondering if anyone can tell me the basic and sources where i can find more information.

Is there like a site we can go to.
We also live in the southern east coast of Australia, is there like any special rules here.
Should we go to a broker, where i can i find one.
