How do you start a march for a good cause?

We often see people running to raise money for a good cause like finding a cure for cancer, or other worthy cause.

Could someone explain how this works? Who donates? The participants? Other people?

I am alone and would like to march to raise awareness and get some financial contributions if possible. How do I get started? Can anyone show me the way? (pun intended)
