The timing belt on my Escort broke. I've been working on this damn thing for... oh 14hrs now w/ not much luck. The hitch in my get along is that I don't precisely what to do with the VCT of my engine when setting the timing. Do I turn it a little bit after I get the cams locked so that when the engine turns there's already a bit of built up pressure? Do I turn it halfway? Do I turn it all the way? Do I not turn it at all but do something I have yet to think of?
So far I've managed to get the vehicle started but not doing anything with the VCT and putting the belt on. This resulted in rough running and the engine constantly dieing. We turned the VCT About 1/2 way and it ran, but there was 0 power in the engine. It would go and stay running (except when idling (which is due to an O2 sensor I believe)) but would not have any acceleration of note. I could stand on the pedal but to no avail.
So, if anyone could tell me what it is I need to do w/ the cam gears, vis a vis the VCT, I would be ever so grateful!!
