how do you set a VM800 Chrome Pink phone to 'com port' to connect to computer?

Just bought a Virgin VM800 Chrome Pink, got it up and running ok, installed software onto the pc. When i plug the phone into my pc using the usb cable it's asking me to set the communication mode to 'com port' first. I don't know how to do this, the instructions given are limited on the leaflet provided. Anyone know?
