Just so you know, you can text from Yahoo Messenger. Look for the SMS button. It is super easy to do it that way. Better than using the Verizon site because you can receive them too. - Not really an answer to your question, but a better way to do it.

just go to verizonwireless.com and click on the messaging tab, it should navigate you from there.

I'm not sure if you've heard, but they've just invented this new product called a telephone! You can call anyone with simply pressing their number into the dialing pad! It's great!
