how do you reprogram the computer on a 2001 buick century v6 3.1L?

i took it to a smog/repair shop because i'm trying to get it to pass smog. the check engin light is on and has been on but car runs great. took it to a smog/repair shop and they said that all they could tell me is to reprogram the computer or replace it cuz they didn't have the computer to do it..
