how do you remove just the link in the app tray not the program on android?

if no one knows a way then can someone tell me where the links are in the phone memory (when viewed in a file manager), ive looked for a while but cant seem to find it in the obvious places
im also thinking it might be under the root directory and im not a root user so is it that?
