How do you protect your palm?

I had a palm Vx back in the day and I'm getting a TX very soon, but one of my big problems with something I'm going to have to carry around 90% of the day is where I'm going to put it. A good part of my day is spent away from my desk and in and out of my car. I kept my vx in my pocket and I finally stopped using it because it was too heavy and bulky to keep in my pocket with my wallet and my other pocket has the keys which would scratch up the device, I was thinking maybe I could get a leather case and that would protect it from my keys, but I want to get an idea of what other people with the tx or tx sized devices deal with this issue. Is the tx too large to comfortably keep in a pocket? Should I just start carrying around a purse or a "man bag"?

With my Ruger Super Redhawk 44 magnum, and the PalmOne hard case or PalmOne leather case. Lately I've been using the leather case more than the hard case.

I have a T5 and before that I had a T2. To me the whole point of a pda is it's smallness and portability. Putting the thing into any kind of case seems to me to be self defeating. I have a screen protector on my T5 to prevent scratches and I simply keep the thing in the front pocket of my jeans.

It's never yet caused me a problem.

Wow, I've never thought about it the way that NickGB has put it ... I guess it does seem a little counter-intuitive to turn something that's supposed to be portable and convenient into a brick. Good point

Anyways, what I figure is that when you first get your PDA, you want to be cautious about how to carry it around, because you spent a substantial amount of money on it ... and then later (may be weeks or even months later) you will allow yourself to be a little more reckless with it ... I guess it's a matter of concern over security?

I have a T|X and an Ipaq 1930 (both great PDAs), but the newer one (T|X) I tend to wrap up in cotton wool (not literally :D ), because I'm scared that I'll break my $469 AUD investment. The Ipaq on the other hand, I couldn't care less ... don't even have a screen protector on it! I take the Ipaq wherever ... so in essence, it satisfies what NickGB was saying about being a true PDA!

ANYWAYS, back to the topic at hand ... protection wise for the T|X ... first things first, get a screen protector! I can't stress that enough ... the T|X has a beautiful screen, and the last thing you want it for it to be scatched. The best one to get is from PPC Techs, it can be re-used and doesn't reduce touchscreen sensitivity (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/)

Secondly, consider getting a case for it. If you want the flexibility that NickGB and johnling were referring to, then maybe consider either a leather case or the Palm OEM aluminium case ... Most of the other aluminium cases are not terrible flexible (i.e. you can't fold the cover 180 degrees) - making it slightly un-user friendly. But, if you want a rugged aluminium case that gives you accessiblility to all port (and has a more secure clip than the Palm OEM case), then go for the Innopocket T5/TX Metal Case ... that's the one I have. The only two negatives of it are: (1) cover doesn't fully rotate 180 degrees; and (2) the ports accessibility can also be a negative thing

Whatever you decide to do to protect your investment, I'd advise you to visit a website called "The Gadgeteer", which has stacks of reviews on everything PDA (accessories, case, units, software ... you name it!) the link - http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/

Good luck mate!

Regarding carrying handheld in pants pocket: I have a Handspring T90 that I carried in my front pants pocket and alot of dust collected under the screen. That stopped me from carrying in my pants. Maybe the newer handhelds are sealed alot tighter, but I do not carry handhelds in my pants pockets anymore. Shirt pocket, yes. Sent my T90 to a guy in Minnesota and he cleaned it up like new. About $32 including freight. Anybody else had a problem with dust under the screen on the newer Palm units?

I use the leather case for the TX as well. I put it in my shirt pocket if I need both hands to work on something, but most of the time, it is handheld. I personally would like to preserve the aesthetics as much as possible. Yeah it adds a few millimeters of "fat". But then again, you need not worry too much if you put it in your bag or pocket along with your other stuff rubbing with each other.

Besides, a well-kept PDA will allow you to sell it faster, if you have to, with a better resale value. When I sold my 2-year old T|E in favor of the T|X, the buyer was amazed about the condition... he bought it on the spot without even negotiating for a discount. :D

I guess my primary priority is the function of my T3, not just it's portability. It's a VERY USEFUL piece of equipment that I would be lost without. That being the case I'm going to protect it with something other than just the inside of my pocket. I use a Belkin leather case that will clip on my belt. I'd say put it in something other than just your pocket. Some of you are obviously a lot braver than me, but I've had a PDA fall out of a shirt pocket often enough (2 Visor Prisms whose screens got cracked) that I want to make sure it's secure. Even if I look kind of geeky.

Well I got the palm yesterday, pretty nice, the syncing through wifi is great.
I put on the screen protector that came with it right away, it seems to catch the stylus though, on my old vx I used writeright screen protector and they had a kind of textured surface that made the stylus glide on the screen do the writeshields do that?
Also, graffiti 2 is really hard to use is it possible to use graffiti 1 on the tx? If so is it not reccomended (are there downsides to it)?

I don't know for you, but I carry my Z22 in my pocket everytime, but I have the same problem whenever I carry my phone and keys. Just buy some belt attachement, or else keep it in your pocket and think about a cellphone/key belt clip

RhinoSkin hardcases are my favorite. I have used them for almost all of my PDAs. I have dropped them, sat on them, dropped things on them, and more and have never damaged my PDAs. The other nice thing, is that they are very form fitting. Not much bigger than your PDA. Plus they have slots for your SD cards, headphone jack, IR, stylus, and bottom universal port.

The silicon cases that are out for the T|X/T|5 are pretty nice and add minimal bulk. They're not going to stop your T|X from getting busted when your pet elephant accidentally steps on it, but it will definitely protect the T|X from the hazards of the typical pants pocket. Some models come with a flip-up plastic shield over the screen, and that provides a nice double layer of protection when used in conjuction with a screen protector. When I first got mine I didn't like it, but it's growing on me and I've found myself using it quite a bit lately. The shield stops stray finger prints and such on the screen, but because it's clear you can see the screen for when alarms go off or if you've gotten used to the navigating only using the buttons, you can leave your stylus in the silo. I bought the black silicon case with a clear screen shield, so except for the hidden Palm logo, you can barely tell that it's on the T|X. Click HERE for a picture.

As for screen protectors, I highly recommend ClariVue (www.clarivue.com). They're not adhesive, you clean them and re-use them, they go on relatively easy, and when they're on it's difficult to tell they're there. Writing on them feels like you're writing on a notepad with a pencil. The best part is that they're only $8 for a set of two (shipped). My wallet was choking on the cost of Boxwaves, which are highly recommended by most Palm users, but also VERY expensive, and don't see to be any different from the ClariVues.

I have the same case Pilot has, and I like it very much. I have the flip-up hard-screencover, which is great when i'm just reading an ebook and I don't need to touch the screen, and the silicone covering the buttons means I don't have to be too careful of dirty hands. It IS open at the top and bottom, if I carried this in my pocket I'd probably think twice about this sort of case, but i'm a woman and carry it in my purse so it's quite safe. :)

Screen protectors=absolutely necessary. Should be the first accessory you buy, probably before ever taking the thing out of the house.

And like oj88, I try to keep mine in the best possible condition so that when it's time to upgrade, I can resell it for a decent price and put the money towards the new model. :)

I use the Rhinoskin Palm T/X Leather Flip Case with a belt clip for my T/X. I wrote a review that you can read here. http://digitalguy3.blogspot.com/ its about 2/3 of the way down the page.

I like keeping it on the other hip opposite my cell phone. Very comfortable to wear.

First place I use the screen protector that came with my TX, the flip cover too and a Targus Camera Micro Case ( http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=DBMC00 ).
The last one fits like a glove on my TX and has saved it from two or three falls.
Features:

* Convenient carry case for most micro and slimline cameras
* Use detachable neck strap or nylon belt loop for easy transport
* Elastic webbing on side of case allows expansion
* Internal pocket for film and media storage

I will back up Biohaz75, and 69vert. I have been using a Rinoskin case for my T2 over a year now, and it is worn some, but is still holding up. I like the metal post. It is much better than the plastic ones. One thought, if you buy it, get a second clip or two. I have caught the case on the car door more than once, broke the plastic clip. The case will be a little tight when it is new, but wears in great. Guitar Picker

I'm with Nick all the way. My E2, like my IIIc before it, lives in the front pocket of my jeans with just the flip cover. Not even a screen protector. It does seem slightly prone to collecting dust in the SD Card slot if you leave it empty. I don't like the idea of buying something that fits easily in my pocket, and then keeping it in a case which doubles its volume.

I use the faux leather cover for my T/X but used rhino skin cases for my HP's and my workpad and Vx
I use mine so often that the flip makes it easier to use, and I use a screen protector always.
And what seem to work for me is I alway skeep my T/X in my left front pocket and nothing else goes in there.
