How do you overcome being overly shy in theater or dance class?

I take acting classes and speech classes, but in jazz class, our teacher tells us to have fun and go a little crazy. I can't seem to let go. I'm the kind of person that gets embarrassed easily.

Please help!

It helps me to put on a character. Imagine that you're just "playing" the person who is up there and showing what he/she would do.

It might help to have sunglasses or a mask on. Eventually you should try to realize that you're always wearing a mask of some sort. It's not really you, just your performed presence.

pretend noone is there and try not to care if you get embarrassed. sometimes its good to get embarrassed on purpose. then youll get used to it and other people will think, "wow. she must feel really good about herself."

Think that everything that happens there will end in about 1hr. Everything will get to normal then, and in any case, the rest of guys will not care about it anyway. You are in a safe place dear!
Many "outgoing" and extrovert actors are very shy people when they leave the stage... It's just ACTING!!! ENJOY!

Just act as though your applying for a job as an actor. The role of letting go is the one you are playing. Don't worry about being judge or being embarrassed because people are not laughing or judgeing you, they're judgeing your character. If that doesn't work, try thinking, if i was to win $1 million for letting go and for the best performance i could possible give then think of that.
also just try letting go when your alone.
xx
