how do you open the bonnett on a 96 ford fiesta classic?

got a 96 ford fiesta classic D 1800 with a fat battery and cant find a bonnet relese catch inside of the car. I have found what feels like one under the frount of the bonnett but its very stiff and I dont know which direction to apply pressure from the front of the car. Forward towards the engine, back, left, right, up, or, down. I dont wish to break it by forcing it in the wrong direction.

Any help would be appreciated.
