open it)? I downloaded the AVG antiviral software but cannot open the file i downloaded (index.php) My computer does not reconize the right program to open it. What program do I need to open it, or what do I need to do to install the sofeware.

The other poster is correct that a php file is just a text file and so you can open it with notepad. It won't be very interesting though, it is just HTML interspersed with PHP code.

You probably downloaded the wrong thing from the AVG website. Did it download very quickly? If it did you should go back there and instead of doing a right-click, "save as" sequence, just click the download link and wait for the page to load. Your browser should ask you what to do with what will likely be a zip, exe, or dmg file.
