Natural disasters take out Washington D.C. and continuity of government facilities, wrol situation occurs
Taking place in the near future
Characters survive because they stockpiled food at a cabin and own guns etc
Mom is at home during the day and hears news of destruction and goes and gets kids from school, which is in chaos. Returns home to find Dad at home with 2 men and one woman from work. Fight occurs. The group tries to leave via highway, it is jammed. They turn around and go out of town via back routes to a cabin 100 miles from home. At cabin are guns, atvs, ammo, food, fuel, all necessities.
At cabin family settles into routine, but then, because of the extra people from work, food runs short. There are arguments about what to do. Eventually, group takes car back towards large city, and finds a shanty town sprung up on highway where cars died and people wouldn’t leave them. Some have guns, and the group fights its way away from the city, and one of the children is shot.
Group is frantic for food and for medical attention for the child. They drive back to the cabin, and get what little food is left, guns, water, and ammunition; and load it all onto atvs. They look at maps and travel from town to town looking for a doctor to help the child. After a few confrontations, they find a peaceful town with a doctor who saves the child’s life on the condition that the group never leaves the town because they don’t want marauders to find out about the town and attack it.
After some conflict with the authorities, they stay as part of the town’s militia because of their experience with marauders and the fact that they have guns. Eventually, the group is absorbed into the society, which has become a socialist state that is ruled by elected officials, and is better off than before the collapse. New realities are taught in school, and a sustainable society is reborn
