How do you know whether the O/D button is turned on or off. (FYI, Ford Contour 1999)?

I just bought Ford contour 1999 car. I later realized that the O/D Off indicator doesn't blink when I push the Overdrive button (the green button on the gear shift handle). Is there any other way to know whether its turned on or off.

I want to drive with overdrive turned on on highways so that it consumes less fuel and the engine doesn't get heated up.
