How do you know when its time to get rid of your car rather than spend $ on fixing it?

I have a 1998 Subaru Outback with 150,000 miles on it. It has always been a good, reliable car. I bought it used with 47,000 miles on it and within the last year and a half or so, things have started to go. Now it needs an exhaust system or it will fail inspection. Is it time to let it go?
