How do you know that in hackthissite.org basic mission 3, its a php file?

I've already passed this, but I don't know why its a php file? and what a php file is?
 
a php file is simmilar to a html file but it is interpreted on the webserver rather than your computer. Php is also a seperate language from html and is used for things like uploads
