how do you know if a bike is the right size for you?

im looking into buying a new mountian bike and i was wondering how do i know if its the correct size for me?My old bike is way too small and i dont know how bike sizing works.My top choice is a kranked factor 26 with 18" frame,and im 5"6.Is this a good bike for me?
