How do you keep your child motivated when it comes to sports?

I was a lazy child growing up. I played soccer and baseball for years, but I was never really motivated to excel in any particular activity. My question is to parents with kids who've had success in a sport and were motivated to perform greater than their peers. How did you keep them motivated to stick with it?

Adding to the previous answer, provide opportunities for the child to make friends on the team - then they'll egg each other on to stay involved and the friendship will be part of that motivation.

Motivation comes from within. It's either a drive to achieve, a competitive spirit, or a combination of both.

Then there are external reasons, such as the belief that sports will help one get into college, pressure from parents, fear of failure, etc. These are lousy reasons for doing sports.

I doubt you were lazy as a child You just weren't motivated to do sports. Nothing wrong with that.

My daughter's motivation come from her love of her sport - martial arts. She chose the sport, she chose to train. If she decides to quit, it's also her choice.

All the best.
