How do you judge skill in xbox games.?

im talking about games such as call of duty 5 and call of duty 4, you would judge whos better by your over all kill death ratio right? because if you judge by wins/loses you might just have bad team mates that couldnt do good but you were able to do good but you still lost, please do help
